Pedal board diode output wiring

I've just picked up a similar project - an older organ pedalboard with some electrical outputs that I want to send through an Arduino with a MIDI shield to send MIDI signals to a sound generator unit. My pedalboard has two simpe-looking electronic boards in it that appear to only have diodes on them. There are 32 pedals, and a 14 pin double row header output connector. The connector daisy chains to the two boards, each of which appears to have 16 or 17 diodes, and nothing else. The boards are hard to get a good look at, so I can't tell how things are wired together. I haven't had a chance to test it with a voltmeter yet. Can anyone think how you would use diodes to combine 32 pedal connection signals into a 14 pin output?
I'm going to try to enclose some photos showing the situation. The pedals make two wires connect, and then....?
